Getting The Right Help For An Alcoholic

Alcoholism can play havoc with the life of the alcoholic as well as his family and friends and everyone around him. It probably starts as a casual drink or two. It leads to an increased consumption of alcohol and finally, the person does not even realise that alcohol has taken control of his life and he needs that drink in order to function normally. His added need for alcohol makes him short tempered, there are monetary problems and he cannot concentrate on his work. His social life and his work are affected very badly. It may take some time for him to come to terms with the fact that alcohol is a problem and he needs to get professional help to deal with his problem.

Once he comes to terms with the fact that he needs treatment, he will need the help of someone who is close to him. He needs to confide in someone. Then he can be coaxed to visit a doctor and get admitted into an alcohol treatment center. He may be asked to shift into a residential facility if his addiction is very bad. Otherwise day care will be prescribed. Finding the right Alcohol treatment centers may be a little time consuming. You will need to do all the research and then decide which one to choose. If the wrong treatment center is chosen, the person can even have a relapse and that is not a good thing.

Here are some questions you can ask when choosing an alcohol addiction rehab center.
  1. Contact the Department of Health and locate all the alcohol treatment centers in your area.
  2. Call a counsellor and discuss each facility’s typical patient. Find out how many patients actually finish the program.
  3. Ask what the relapse rate is.
  4. Find out how well qualified the staff is. Ask how many violent incidents took place. This will give you a good idea about the qualifications of the staff.
  5. Talk about the present situation and ask them what a typical plan of treatment would be.
  6. Make sure you find out how much the treatment will cost. Some centers receive government aid so you will not have to pay much. Other centers do not receive any aid so they can be very expensive.
The treatment of an alcoholic takes a long time. It has to be combined with counselling sessions and a support group.
